I believe that the point of this narrative is to not automatically judge people because of their actions and don’t lose sight of the fact that everyone has their own opinion. I believe this goes along with the point that just because what you and the majority of society think is “normal” others may not see it this way. Therefore, just because they don’t follow the norms of society does not make their beliefs wrong or incorrect, it just makes them a little different in everyone else’s mind.
Greed is another important aspect of this narrative and it shows when the author states, “These were the second-best things I had received, and while it hurt to destroy them, it would have hurt even more to give them away” (803). He decided that is was better to destroy the candy and make himself sick than give the candy away to others who would enjoy it. Other symbols in the narrative that show greed are the coffee can marked, “Don’t Be Greedy” (801) by the Tomkeys and the candy bag marked, “My Candy.Keep Out”, (802) by the author. I believe that the author is trying to send a message that society is self-centered and automatically thinks that they must take as much as they can and keep it all for themselves.
